I have been painting both in studio and en plein air for more than 20 years. I developed my painting skills first with watercolor and then with oils.
Painting In The Studio
In working my larger impressionist or stylized landscapes, I spend a good deal of time on the preparations and intent for each piece. The execution is carried out in a mindful way, with easy music surrounding me.
Painting en Plein Air
Many of my small pieces are done en plein air, on site, or you might call them field studies. Sometimes
they end up being the work-up for a larger piece.
When I paint outside, there is a certain urgency to work fast. Shadows seem to move at an amazing
speed, and weather conditions can change in an instant.
Plein air pieces tend to be loose and fresh, and sometimes the environment becomes part of the
painting….like bits of stuff in the air or little no-see-ums that land on the wet paint. I carry tweezers
with me in my kit.
I always take lots of photos when I’m out, so that in bad weather, I will be able to work inside.
